Saturday & Sunday (7th & 8th March 2015)

ELEMENTS and Koshas:
According to yogic principles, everything in the universe, including our body, is made up of five subtle elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether (space).

Our own beings also comprise five “sheaths” or koshas; Annamaya Kosha, Pranamaya Kosha, Manomaya Kosha, Vignanomaya Kosha and Anandamaya Kosha. In this workshop, through a variety of asana and pranayama, we will explore and bring into balance our own unique expression of these forces. We will also learn where the koshas and elements meet and how these intersections inform our practice.

Saturday March 7th morning 9.30 – 12.30pm:
1) The standing poses rule the outer layer of our being (Annamaya Kosha). They bring forth the element of earth and we develop strength and stamina. But while earth is grounding, it has to be balanced by the other elements in order that it does not oppress. We will learn how to do this in the standing poses.

Elements and Koshas. Saturday March 7th: afternoon 230 – 5.00pm:
2) Forward Bends and Twists.
We will learn how to work from the back body, the mental body (Manomaya Kosha) in the twisting poses to kindle the element of heat in the spine. Forward bends cool us down again, helping us relax the brain.

Elements and Koshas. Sunday March 8th morning 8.30 – 11.30pm:
3) Fire rules the mental body (Manomaya Kosha). We practice the back bends to spark the element of fire and energize and stimulate creativity.

4) Restorative & Pranayama (12.30 - 3.30pm)
The element of space (Anandamaya Kosha) connects us to te universal spirit. When restorative asana and pranayama touch the more subtle elements of air and ether, the spiritual life has begun.
